Lead Scoring for Small Sales Teams: A No-BS Guide

You do not need a data science team to prioritize leads. Here is the simplest scoring model that actually works.

Most lead scoring articles are written for enterprise sales ops teams with Salesforce admins. This is not that.

    Why score leads at all?

Because your time is finite. If you have 50 new leads this week and time to call 10, you need a way to pick the right 10. Gut feel is worse than a simple model — proven across thousands of B2B sales teams.

    The 4-factor model

For a small team, four signals beat anything more complex:

    1. Source quality (0–25 points)

    • "Talk to sales" / booking widget submission — 25
    • Lead form on a high-intent page (pricing, contact) — 20
    • Answer Engine capture (high-intent query) — 15
    • FAQ widget / newsletter signup — 5

    2. Contact quality (0–25 points)

    • Business email + phone provided — 25
    • Business email only — 15
    • Free webmail (gmail/yahoo) + phone — 10
    • Free webmail only — 0

    3. Engagement (0–25 points)

    • Multi-page session before submitting — 25
    • Returned across multiple visits — 15
    • Read 2+ Answer Engine responses — 10
    • Submitted on first page view — 5

    4. Intent keywords (0–25 points)

Look for these words in their message or query:

    • "Budget", "approved", "ready" — 20
    • "ASAP", "this quarter", "Q1" — 15
    • "Comparing", "evaluating", "exploring" — 10
    • No message — 0

    The threshold that matters

Sum the four = lead score (0–100).

    • 80+ = call within the hour
    • 50–79 = personalized email within 24h
    • <50 = nurture sequence, no human time

    Do not over-engineer

You do not need machine learning. You need a rule that lets your team agree on "who do we call first." Revisit the weights every 90 days based on what actually closed.

    Built-in scoring

Next Day Sales scores every lead 0–100 using exactly this model. Hot leads (80+) get a 🔥 flag in your Leads Inbox and notification emails so the right deals never get buried.

The Rep installs the conversion mechanics this post describes — question capture, grounded answers, click-to-call, booking and lead capture — and measures every one of them.
